Hawkwind are a classic psychedelic rock band that formed in England in the late 60s. They are probably most famous in the mainstream world as the band that made Lemmy Kilmister famous (he later went on to become the frontman for Motorhead). But Hawkwind are a great band in their own right and have a massive cult following even to this day.

Brainstorm is from the album Doremi Fasol Latido, which is one of their classic albums from 1972 and, yes, this is one of the albums to feature Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister on guitar; in fact, it was the first Hawkwind album to feature Lemmy.

The Sword - Fire Lances the Ancient Hyperzephyrians

The Sword are a four-piece metal band from Austin, Texas featuring J.D. Cronise, Kyle Shutt, Bryan Richie and Trivett Wingo. Their sound could be compared to High On Fire, Mastodon, and Saviours and is clearly very influenced by 70s rock such as Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath.

They struck success with their first album, 2006's 'Age of Winters' which found a big hit in the song 'Freya'. This song, 'Fire Lances the Ancient Hyperzephyrians' is from their new 2008 album, 'Gods of the Earth'. The new sound is a little different but along the same vein.

Black Mountain - Stormy High free mp3

Black Mountain are a rock band from Canada formed in 2004 led by Stephen McBean and Amber Webber. They are often classified as Indie Rock but I think they are more of a classic rock homage band than anything else. They do a pretty brilliant job of writing original songs while keeping their classic rock influences on their sleeves.

'Stormy High' is from their latest album, 'In The Future' which is really a great album and they practically have a different sound with every song. At times they sound like Black Sabbath, other times more like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Leaf Hound or David Bowie. Add in a dash of original sound and some great songwriting and you have a great record.

Probot - Shake Your Blood free mp3

Probot is a collaborative project created by Dave Grohl where he teams up with famous metal musicians from the 80s and 90s who greatly influenced his style. The album brings together a lot of interesting artists including Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, Cronos of Venom, Max Cavalera from Sepultura and Soulfly, Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead, Mike Dean of Corrosion of Conformity, Lee Dorian of Voivod, Scott 'Wino' Weinrich of Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan and the Obsessed, King Diamond of Merciful Fate and Jack Black of Tenacious D.

This song, entitled 'Shake Your Blood' has Lemmy Kilmister on lead vocals and Scott 'Wino' Weinrich on guitar as well as Grohl playing the remainder of the instruments. Teaming up Wino and Lemmy leads to some amazing results and this song sounds every bit as good as a classic Motorhead song.

Mammatus - Dragon of the Deep pt. 1 free mp3

Mammatus is a heavy psychedelic/progressive rock band from Corralitos, CA (Santa Cruz County). Their sound is fairly unique, blending elements of classic prog rock bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson with elements of more modern stoner rock bands like Sleep and Isis.

Their songs are generally very long and at over 8 minutes, Dragon of the Deep part One from their self-titled album is actually one of their shorter songs. Their live shows are also of epic proportions and not to be missed, often involving wizards, fog machines, lazers and light shows.

Big Business - Grounds For Divorce free mp3

Big Business are a two-piece band from Seattle comprised of Jared Warren - formerly of Karp and Tight Bros From Way Back When - on bass and vocals and Coady Willis - formerly of The Murder City Devils - on drums. They also comprise the current rythym section of The Melvins and the two bands often tour together; Jared and Coady open for The Melvins as Big Business and then hang around on stage to play The Melvins set.

The music is fairly unique, the best I could try and describe it would be indie/stoner rock/sludge with some jazzy grooves. This song, 'Grounds For Divorce' is from their second album, 'Here Comes the Waterworks'

Iggy Pop and David Bowie - I Wanna Be Your Dog (live) free mp3

I don't think Iggy Pop needs any introduction, but he is the grandfather of garage rock and punk, and 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' was one of his first hits with the Stooges in 1969. It's been a hit for years and to this day gets a lot of radio airplay and is in the soundtrack to a lot of movies.

I don't have all the background on this recording, but considering that David Bowie sings on it, it is probably from one of their tours together in the late 70s. I think this recording really captures the energy of their live performance.

Doomriders - Black Thunder free mp3

Doomriders are something of a side project for Converge bassist Nate Newton; but they have built of quite a following of their own. Departing from the noisy chaos of Converge, Doomriders has more of a focus on classic rock and heavy grooves. Clearly influenced by such acts as Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden and the Melvins, the Doomriders record blasts you with a heavy dose of beer-drinking, bong-smoking, skateboarding grooves.

Black Thunder is the title track from their debut album, Black Thunder, and it more or less epitomizes their sound.

Boris are a three-piece rock outfit from Japan consistign of Atsuo, Takeshi and Wata. Depending on the album their music spans many genres, but their staples are rock and roll and drone rock. Their rock albums list their name as 'BORIS' while the drone albums list them as 'boris'.

This song is from their newest album, 'Smile' and it is a lot more psychedelic than their previous work; lots of interesting noises/production mixed in with the melodies here and it doesn't really get heavy until the end.
